Kiera Monique Smith

Oklahoma City police on Wednesday arrested an elementary school teacher on suspicion of sexual battery, The Oklahoman has learned.

Kiera Monique Smith, 34, is a teacher at Martin Luther King Elementary in northeast Oklahoma City. She was being held Wednesday in the Oklahoma County Jail on $5,000 bail, jail records show.

Oklahoma City Public Schools issued a statement that said "district teams are fully cooperating with authorities."

"OKCPS will take action as needed once internal and external investigations are complete," the statement read. "As always, the safety and security of students and staff is our number one priority."

Martin Luther King Principal Stephanie Spears notified families of the arrest in a letter.

"Although we have limited details at this time, we understand that the incident in question did not involve students," the letter stated.

Reached Wednesday, a police spokesman said he didn't have any information on the arrest.
